Sabina Fenn is an artist and illustrator residing in Toronto, she launched her exclusive summer poster collection with us earlier this year.

What made you get into art in the first place?

I’ve been a creative soul for as long as I can remember, it’s something that I’ve always enjoyed. I used to do lots of crafts at home after school when I was young and often the arts and crafts in school were the area where I excelled. I didn’t think I could ever actually be an artist so I just figured it was something I’d keep doing for fun. I’m grateful to be able to do it every day now!

How would you describe your style?

It’s quite feminine, a little playful, a little whimsy but also has a dash of sophistication. I like to paint various subjects because I like to keep learning new ways to improve my art, but women are a prominent theme.
I love painting feminine figures because we have curves and therefore the figures tend to flow a little better with a brush.

What techniques do you use in your work?

My art is quite loose and painterly, I try to be very intuitive when I’m painting in the sense that I let the painting sort of tell me what it needs. It sounds a bit crazy, but a big part of my process is really trying to hone into what subjects I really want to paint and how I paint them is a continuously evolving practice of experimentation and allowing the whole process to flow.

What's your favourite piece for sale on Fy! and why?

My “Bonne Nuit” art print is my current favourite. It’s inspired by vintage vogue cover illustrations and those were what initially sparked my interest in the subject. It makes me feel peaceful and I’m happy with how it all came together, especially the colour palette. I actually have it framed above my bed at home.

Can you recommend or suggest any other artists on the platform that you love?

Yes I love Lara Lee Meintjez, Charlotte Nicholson, Delphine Balme, there are so many!

Where do you get inspiration for your new pieces?

I prefer to find inspiration in my daily life. I think it adds another level of dimension to my work, it makes it more lively because there are certain things you just don’t pick up on from looking at pictures as opposed to painting from things you see in real life.

My partner and I are quite active, we go backcountry camping a lot, hiking, even snowshoeing in the winter and I often get inspired or find new ideas while we’re away doing these things. It’s like you have to remove yourself from your everyday scenarios sometimes and just let your mind wander :)
