How to identify your own style and what you like as a starting point

Curating a gallery wall is a great opportunity to embrace your creativity and have fun. You can approach styling in a variety of ways:

Go eclectic - mix and match prints that showcase different mediums e.g. illustrations, collage and photography. Choosing prints that share the same colour palette woven through the design will ensure a cohesive look despite your mix of styles.

Pick a theme - e.g. stick to the same colour throughout for a uniformed look, opt for black & white for a minimalist feel or mix in family photos from treasured holidays with seascapes or architectural prints from your favourite destination to create a memory wall.

How to be a bit braver in your choices even if you are nervous

Try out your ideas before you commit - create a moodboard by saving prints in one place as you browse. Drag and drop images of the prints you love into a blank document on your computer and edit them until you find a combination you are happy with. Don’t be afraid - pick what you like and go for it!

What limitations are there on what you can mix and match?

The most important thing to remember is to choose prints that share, in some way, the same overall colour palette. You can mix the size, shape and style of your prints but always match your colours in some way throughout to create a link between them.

Getting the style and colour right for the room.

Think about the existing colours in your room - a colourful gallery wall can bring life to neutral spaces whilst a more muted palette can pair back bold walls.

Also think about what you use the room for. Watercolours, scandi designs and botanical prints will promote relaxation whereas typography, contemporary and geometric styles can bring vibrancy to an entertaining space and provide a talking point.

What unusual combinations work well? (So maybe old fashioned photos and super modern illustrations, anything like that)

Contrasting the style of your prints is a great way to add variety. I love pairing vintage posters with line art and minimalist styles. Experiment, have fun with it and trust your eye - you will find combinations that you never would have thought of!

How to get the layout right (dependant on room or space size too)

The simplest way to tackle layout is to keep the size of your space in mind and choose a selection of small, medium and large framed prints. Use some old wrapping paper or newspaper to cut out the size of your prints and stick to your walls, or lay your chosen prints out on the floor first, playing around with the configuration until you have found the aesthetic you are after.

Should you build as you go or try to buy a collection in one?

You can easily build a gallery wall from an existing piece in your home or start completely from scratch with a colour or theme in mind. If you are unsure of what style to go for or don’t have much time, Fy!’s gallery wall inspiration is a fantastic way to quickly transform a space. Choose from a selection of different styles and mix and match depending on your size of space.
